Top Tips for Kissable Lips
Winter is coming… which means now is the time to invest some energy into your skincare routine. Being our largest organ, your skin is exposed to all sorts of pollutants and harsher weather conditions that can do some damage if you do nothing to combat it. Specifically, your lips can take a beating, especially if you live in colder parts of the country where snow and harsh winds are the regular. As someone who can’t leave the house without a lip balm or chap-stick, I wanted to put together a list of some tips that I have personally tested that have proven to heal chapped lips! Take a look at the following and transform your lips, making them perfectly soft and kissable, just in time for the romantic holiday season. 😉
#1 Natural and Petroleum Free Lip Balms
While it may be fun to try out exotic lip balm flavors and scents, at the end of the day, the chemicals that are present in these types of products are oftentimes damaging to your dry lips. While they do the job for already soft lips, if you are trying to restore you lips back to their smooth state, try using all natural and petroleum free products. Petroleum can be known to clog pores, so if it reaches other parts of your skin, it can cause unnecessary build up (no bueno). Instead, try natural products like coconut oil or cocoa butter. Or, if you want an easy application, test out Burt’s Bees or Pangea Organics!
#2 DIY Exfoliants
It’s easy to find lip scrubs in drug stores and specialty body shops. What’s even easier is making your own exfoliant using ingredients you already have in your kitchen! There are tons of recipes floating around the internet with do-it-yourself lip exfoliant recipes that are super easy to make (Brit + Co provides a great list here)! It’s important to exfoliate your lips to get rid of dry skin and make your pout as smooth as possible. With a little honey, brown sugar, and coconut oil, you’ll be on your way to kissable lips in no time!
Like the rest of our body, lips rely on good ol’ H2O to remain plump and healthy. It makes sense if you think about it; more than half of the adult body is made up of water! While drinking water is not an immediate cure to dry lips, it will help relieve them over the long run. So, do yourself a favor and drink up.
#4 Dismiss the Mattes
Yes, matte lip looks are super in this season. With all the major make up brands producing matte lipsticks and lip product lines, people are getting hyped up on this snazzy fall trend. However, matte lipsticks, although they look fab, are the most drying lip product on the market. Matte lip colors lack the oils that disperse pigment and keep lips moisturized, which can lead to intense flaking and drying. However, if you really can’t live without your mattes, try out Becca Ultimate Matte Lip Colours (beccacosmetics.com) or Bobbi Brown Creamy Matte Lip Colors (bobbibrowncosmetics.com)!
#5 Banish Biting
Are you an anxious lip biter? Well, you may want to re-think this nervous habit, as it can have some negative affects on your oral health. According to New York board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Whitney Bowe, licking and biting your lips exposes them to digestive enzymes that “chew away at the skin and can lead to dermatitis and cheilitis (inflammation), which make lips appear dry and cracked” (Fox News Health). For the sake of smooth lips, try to eliminate biting in order to improve your oral health.
#6 Spend on SPFs
We all know it’s key to apply sunscreen to your face to keep it young and fresh. What we often forget is that our lips need some lovin’ too! Failure to protect your lips from the sun can yield the same results as if you were to forgo lotion at the beach. Burnt lips are no fun, so be sure to protect them with SPF lip balm before you head outside. Don’t be fooled if you live in a colder climate, either- sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Snow reflects sunlight like nobody’s business, so keep a SPF balm like this one in your snowboard jacket and you’ll be set for the slopes.
